To plan a gallery wall, measure the furniture below it, make the whole group about two-thirds of that width, and center the group 57 inches from the floor. Over an 84-inch sofa, that is roughly 56 inches of art, measured edge to edge, with 8 to 10 inches between the sofa back and the lowest frame. Group the pieces by color rather than subject, and remember that frames do not need to match. Cut paper templates, tape them to the wall, and live with them for a day before any nail goes in. Hang the anchor piece first and work outward. When in doubt, go bigger, because art that is too small leaves a wall emptier than bare paint. With an Endless Frame, the frames stay on the wall and the art inside can change, so the layout you plan today keeps working for years.

How do you plan a gallery wall?
A gallery wall looks easy when it is done well and chaotic when it is not. The difference is rarely the art. It is the plan.
Here is the short version. Each step has its own section below, with the numbers we use.
- Pick one wall and measure the furniture below it.
- Set the width of the whole group at about two-thirds of that furniture.
- Choose pieces by color, not by subject.
- Mock up the layout on paper.
- Center the group at 57 inches from the floor.
- Hang the anchor first, then work outward.
No hammer yet. The first four steps happen with a tape measure, a pencil and some paper.

How wide should a gallery wall be?
Treat the whole arrangement as a single piece of art. Then size that piece to the furniture it sits above: about two-thirds of the width.
For an 84-inch sofa, that is roughly 56 inches, measured from the left edge of the leftmost frame to the right edge of the rightmost. Not the full width, and not a tiny cluster floating in the middle.
| Furniture below | About how wide | Art width that works |
|---|---|---|
| 84-inch sofa | 84 inches | Roughly 56 inches, edge to edge |
| King bed | About 76 inches | Near 50 inches. The Gallery size, 50 x 38, fits |
| Queen bed | Two-thirds rule applies | The Statement size, 42 x 30, fits |
When in doubt, go bigger. A group that is too small leaves the wall emptier than bare paint.
Our over the couch collection is built around these proportions.
How high do you hang a gallery wall?
Galleries use one standard. The center of the piece sits 57 inches from the floor. For a gallery wall, treat the whole group as one piece and put the center of the group at 57 inches.
Above a sofa, leave 8 to 10 inches between the sofa back and the bottom of the lowest frame. Closer feels cramped. Much higher and the art drifts away from the furniture.
Write the numbers on a sticky note. You will want them in step five.
What should go on a gallery wall?
Start with color, not subject. This is the single most useful rule we know. A boat, a mountain and a city street can hang together if they share a palette. Three beautiful subjects in three unrelated colors will argue.
Our Inspiration page and the color guide both lean on this idea. A wall of cool blues, a wall of warm earth tones or a wall in black and white will each feel calm.
Frames do not need to match. You can mix finishes if you repeat them. We go deeper on that in do gallery wall frames have to match.

Two palettes to start with:
- Black and white. The black and white collection is the easiest to group, because nothing competes.
- Earth tones. The earth tones collection is warm and forgiving beside wood and linen.
Begin with the pieces you love most. Let the wall grow outward from them, and stop when the group feels finished.
How do you test the layout before you hang it?
This is the step everyone skips and everyone regrets. Mock it up first.
Cut a paper template for each frame, the exact size of the frame. Kraft paper, newspaper or taped printer sheets all work. Mark where the hanger sits on the back of each frame onto its paper twin, so you know where each nail will go.
Tape the templates to the wall with painter's tape. Step back. Look from the doorway and from where you actually sit. Live with the paper for a day.
Paper does not leave holes. You can shuffle it as many times as you like.

What order do you hang a gallery wall in?
Order saves you from leveling the same frame four times.
- Hang the anchor first. This is the largest piece, or the one nearest the center of the group.
- Add the pieces directly beside it.
- Work outward to the edges, keeping the gaps even. Pick one gap and repeat it across the whole wall.
- Use your paper marks. Because you recorded each hanger position, you can tap each nail in on the first try.
- Take the paper down last, once every frame is on its nail.
- Step back and check the center of the group against 57 inches.
The Endless Frame arrives pre-assembled and ready to hang, with self-leveling wall hardware included. That removes the part of this process people dread most.
What do you need on hand?
Less than you think. A tape measure, a pencil, painter's tape and enough paper to cover each frame. A level is handy, though the Endless Frame includes self-leveling wall hardware.
One more tip. Once the paper is up, take a photo with your phone. A photo flattens the wall the way your eye does from across the room, and it shows you instantly what is off. Gaps that looked even in person sometimes read uneven in the picture.
Then adjust, photograph again, and only then reach for the hammer.
What mistakes should you avoid?
A few errors show up again and again.
- Hanging too high. Guessing at eye level often lands the group above 57 inches. Measure it.
- Going too small. A modest group on a large wall looks timid. When in doubt, go bigger.
- Grouping by subject. Three boats in three palettes will fight. Group by color instead.
- Skipping the paper. Every wall that was hung without a mock-up has at least one patched hole.
- Matching for the sake of it. Frames do not need to match, so do not let that rule slow you down.
If you get the width, the height and the palette right, the rest forgives you.
What if you want to change the wall later?
Most gallery walls are a commitment. Change the art and you must re-plan the holes.
The Endless Frame is built for the other way. The frame stays on the wall. The art inside keeps evolving. Each frame stores up to 3 mounted prints and up to 50 loose prints, and an open and close tray makes a swap take minutes.
So you can plan the layout once, with care, and let the pictures change with the seasons. Extra prints are 50% off, shipped inside the frame behind the featured piece.
If you want ideas for specific rooms, our guide to gallery wall ideas goes room by room. When you are ready to start, the Endless Frame System begins at $148.

How high should a gallery wall be hung?
