Start with the art
One black frame, every mood
Black gives art definition. It holds warm, cool and quiet photographs with the same crisp line, which is why it keeps working when your collection changes.

Warm
Desert gold and soft light look rich against a thin black line. The frame holds the glow in place.

Cool
Blue water and sky look crisp inside black. The frame gives the horizon a firm edge, and the whole wall feels composed.

Quiet
Black and white photography in a black frame is the most graphic wall in the house. Contrast on contrast, and it never looks busy.

Where Black framed art works best
The same frame changes character from room to room. Here is how to use it in each one.

01
On a gallery wall or in a hallway
Black frames pull different photographs into one composition. Hang them on a pale wall, keep the gaps even, two to three inches, and let the frames repeat while the art changes.

02
For one large statement piece
A black frame gives an oversized photograph a clear edge, so it reads as the center of the room. Above a bed or a sofa, one big piece often does more than six small ones. Sizes go up to the 42" x 62" Collector.

03
Mixed with other finishes
Black looks best with a partner. Pair it with White for contrast, or with Hickory for warmth. Repeat each finish at least twice, keep the borders the same, and the mix holds together.
In the bedroom
Hang one quiet piece above the bed, sized to about two-thirds of the headboard. The dark edge gives a soft room a calm focal point.
In the bathroom
A small black-framed print gives a bright bathroom some structure. One well-chosen piece is often enough.
In the kitchen or dining room
A single black-framed photograph adds a graphic note to a room of wood and stone, and stays out of the way of the table.

Black
Best with high-contrast photography, city scenes and night light. It feels sharp and graphic, and gives a pale wall definition.

Questions about black frames
Do black picture frames look good?
They do, especially around high-contrast photography and bold color. A black frame gives the image a crisp edge, so the picture reads sharper and the wall gets more definition.
Are black frames too heavy for a small room?
Not when the border is right. Our Matted option has a 2-inch white border, which gives the photograph room to breathe inside the black edge, so even a small room feels open.
Black frame or white frame: which is better?
It depends on the art and the wall. Black sharpens high-contrast images and gives a pale wall more definition. White suits bright, airy rooms and color photography. For a graphic, confident look, choose black.
Can you mix black frames with wood frames?
You can. Repeat each finish at least twice, keep the spacing even, and the mix looks deliberate. Black with Hickory is a light, easy pairing. Black with Heritage Walnut feels deep and collected.
What looks best in a black frame?
Black and white photography, city scenes, night light and bold color all look strong in black. Soft pastel art often looks better in White or Hickory.
Are black frames still in style?
Yes. A black frame has been a gallery standard for decades because it gives art a clear edge. With real photography inside, it will look as right years from now as it does today.
