What Size Art Goes Above a Sofa? The Two-Thirds Rule, With the Math

By Helm + Oar

Art above a sofa should span about two-thirds of the sofa's width. For a standard 84-inch sofa, that is roughly 56 inches of art, whether you hang one large piece or a grouping measured edge to edge. In Helm + Oar sizes, the 50 x 38 inch Gallery and the 62 x 42 inch Collector sit on either side of that number, and when in doubt, go bigger, because art that is too small leaves a wall emptier than bare paint. Center the art on the sofa, not on the wall. Leave 8 to 10 inches between the top of the sofa back and the bottom of the frame so the two read as one pair. A 72-inch loveseat takes about 48 inches of art, and a 96-inch sofa takes about 64. Below you will find the math for every common sofa width, the frame size that matches each one, and the mistakes that make a wall look small.

What size art goes above a sofa?

42 in wide, 8 to 10 in above the sofa84-inch sofa

The short answer is two-thirds. Take the width of your sofa, multiply it by two-thirds, and that is how wide your art should be from edge to edge. For an 84-inch sofa, that comes to about 56 inches.

Most people land under that number, and the wall pays for it. A small print above a long sofa floats like a stamp on an envelope. The room feels unfinished, however good the piece is.

The rule works for one large frame or for a grouping. Measure a grouping from the outer edge of the first frame to the outer edge of the last, gaps included. That total is the number that should reach two-thirds.

How do you work out the right width for your sofa?

Four steps, and a tape measure is all you need.

  1. Measure the sofa along its back, from arm to arm.
  2. Multiply that number by two-thirds (or by 0.67).
  3. Find the Endless Frame size closest to the result.
  4. If the answer falls between two sizes, choose the larger one.

The Endless Frame comes in seven sizes, from Small (14 x 18 inches) to Museum (50 x 72). The table below lists each landscape frame as width by height.

Sofa width Two-thirds target Closest Helm + Oar size (width x height)
60-inch loveseat 40 inches Statement, 42 x 30 in
72-inch loveseat 48 inches Gallery, 50 x 38 in
84-inch standard sofa 56 inches Gallery, 50 x 38 in, or Collector, 62 x 42 in
96-inch large sofa 64 inches Collector, 62 x 42 in
108-inch long sofa 72 inches Museum, 72 x 50 in

Groupings reach the same number in different ways. Two Medium frames in landscape (26 inches wide each) with a small gap between them come to a little over 52 inches, close to the 56 an 84-inch sofa wants. Four Small frames in landscape (18 inches wide each) would overshoot, so measure with the gaps included before you commit.

A sectional follows the same logic. Apply two-thirds to the single run of back you are hanging over, not to the whole L.

Should you hang one big piece or a grouping?

Both work, and the choice is about the feel you want.

A single landscape piece is the calmest option. It is the easiest to size, since you only have to hit one number, and it gives the room one quiet focal point. Over a sofa, a wide horizontal echoes the long line of the furniture below it.

A pair or a trio adds rhythm. The rule does not change: the whole grouping, measured edge to edge, should reach two-thirds of the sofa. Keep the gaps between frames identical and line the frames up on a shared center line.

Frames in a grouping do not need to match. Group by color rather than by subject, and the wall will hold together even when the images are very different.

How high above the sofa should the art hang?

Leave 8 to 10 inches between the top of the sofa back and the bottom of the frame. That gap keeps the art tied to the sofa. Any higher and the piece drifts up the wall on its own. Any lower and the sofa seems to swallow it.

Over furniture, the gap leads. On open wall, the gallery standard takes over: the center of the piece at 57 inches from the floor. If your sofa has an unusually tall back, trust the gap. Our guide to how high to hang art walks through the 57-inch math for the walls that have no furniture beneath them.

Center the art on the sofa, not on the wall. If a lamp or a side table sits off to one side, the sofa is still your anchor.

How do you test the size before you buy?

Cut paper or craft paper to the width you calculated, and tape it to the wall above the sofa. Leave 8 to 10 inches above the sofa back. Step to the other side of the room and look. Then sit down on the sofa and look again.

If the template looks bold, you are probably close. If it looks comfortable, go one size larger. Most people trim their instinct downward, and the tape shows it.

Which mistakes make a sofa wall look small?

Three come up again and again.

  • Going too small. This is the most common mistake by a wide margin. When in doubt, go bigger.
  • Hanging too high. Past 10 inches above the sofa back, the art stops reading as part of the seating area.
  • Measuring the wall instead of the sofa. The wall is not the reference. The furniture below the art is.

If you want to see the principle at room scale, the over the couch collection is sorted for exactly this wall, and the landscape collection gathers the wide horizontals that suit it.

What if you are between two sizes?

Choose the larger one. A sofa wall carries scale well, and a frame that is slightly over two-thirds looks intended. A frame that is slightly under looks timid.

There is a second reason to be brave. A big piece feels like a big decision, and that fear is why people undersize. The Endless Frame removes it. The solid White Oak frame stays on the wall at the right size, and the print inside it can change. If the image is not right in a year, you change the image, not the wall.

The frame holds up to 50 prints, stored flat inside it. Extra prints are 50% off and arrive inside the frame, behind the featured piece. So you can size for the sofa you have, and let the art follow the season.

For help choosing what goes in the frame, see our guide to the best art for a living room. The statement collection gathers large-format work for the bigger sizes.

Size it once, change the art for years

Measure your sofa, take two-thirds, and you have the width your wall has been waiting for. Hang it 8 to 10 inches above the back, centered on the sofa, and the room settles.

Then let the art move with your life. The frame is the investment. The art keeps evolving. Begin with the Endless Frame system, from $148, and choose the size that matches your sofa.

Questions people ask

What is the two-thirds rule for art above a couch?

The art should span about two-thirds of the sofa's width. On an 84-inch sofa that is roughly 56 inches, whether you hang one piece or a grouping measured from outer edge to outer edge. It keeps the artwork in proportion to the furniture below it.

How big should art be over a standard sofa?

About 56 inches wide for an 84-inch sofa. In Helm + Oar sizes, that sits between the Gallery (50 x 38 inches) and the Collector (62 x 42 inches). When you are between two sizes, choose the larger one, because too-small art leaves the wall looking emptier than bare paint.

How far above the sofa should the art hang?

Leave 8 to 10 inches between the top of the sofa back and the bottom of the frame. That keeps the art connected to the sofa. Hung higher, it drifts away from the seating and the wall loses its center.

Is it better to hang one large piece or several above a sofa?

Both work. One large landscape piece is the calmest and the easiest to size. A pair or trio adds rhythm. Either way, the total width, measured edge to edge, should reach about two-thirds of the sofa.
