Step one

Start with color.

Find the color you see most in the room: the sofa, a rug, the curtains. Then choose a print with some of that color in it.

Blue is an easy place to start. It goes with wood, linen, white and grey.

A hickory-framed turquoise seascape with a rocky island hangs on a wall beside a window, above a lamp and a vase of dried flowers

Four blues to choose from

Pale, turquoise, navy and sky blue, with two prints for each.

Soft haze

Pale blue, grey and cream. It suits white or cream walls.

Step two

Match the size to your furniture.

Measure the width of the sofa, bed or console. Then choose a print about two-thirds as wide.

Sizes are width by height for a vertical print. For a horizontal print, swap the two numbers. A framed size is 2 inches wider and 2 inches taller than the print-only size of the same name. Prices are the current store prices for one print, Dive Deeper. Every frame color costs the same. Not every print comes in every size.

Examples for four rooms

A framed photograph of a sailboat deck at sea hangs above a cream sofa with cushions, in warm light

Above a sofa

An 84-inch sofa: two-thirds is 56 inches. A horizontal Gallery is 50 inches wide and a Collector is 62. Choose Gallery for more bare wall, or Collector for more coverage. Hang it 8 to 10 inches above the sofa.

Lovers In Capri in a hickory frameA good fit: Lovers In Capri
A framed pastel seascape hangs on a bedroom wall above a bed, next to a window with white curtains

Above a bed

A queen bed is about 60 inches wide, so a horizontal Statement (42 inches wide) fits. A king bed is about 76 inches wide, so Gallery (50 inches wide) fits. Hang it 6 to 8 inches above the headboard.

The Riviera Club in a hickory frameA good fit: The Riviera Club
A framed print of a cowboy boot sign that reads Texas Made hangs above a wooden console with a lamp and a vase of dried branches

Above a console

A 48-inch console: two-thirds is 32 inches. That falls between Medium (26 inches wide) and Large (38 inches wide). Choose Large to fill more of the wall, or Medium to leave more bare wall around it.

Three framed prints in a row on a hallway wall, above a slim black console next to a white door

In a hallway

Measure the open wall between the door frame and the corner. The framed width has to fit inside that space, with a few inches on each side.

What buyers say about size

★★★★★
“I ordered a gallery sized print with the full bleed and I am so happy with how it's arrived! Not only does it look really high quality, but it's generally quite light and doesn't require heavy duty anchors to be hung which is amazing. I missed an email update about my shipping and had the fastest customer service response I've ever seen so, long story short - highly recommend, the pieces from here are really nice”

“Gorgeous print - I got the Statement size (a bit of a splurge!) to fill a very large wall in my primary bathroom and I couldn’t be happier. The print quality is amazing and the framing itself is absolutely perfect. Many people suggest framing your own prints but that is truly cutting a corner here. Trust the experts and let them do their thing! This is my second Helm + Oar print (just bought my first home) but I am sure my home will be filled soon. There’s a piece for everyone, no matter your interests!”

Questions about choosing wall art

What are matted and full bleed prints?

A matted print has a white border, called a mat, between the art and the frame. A full bleed print runs to the edge with no border. Both cost the same.

What if I am between two sizes?

Cut paper to both sizes, tape each to the wall for a day or two, and keep the one that looks right.

Should I choose a horizontal or a vertical print?

Match the shape of the space. A sofa, a bed or a console is wide, so it suits a horizontal print. A narrow wall or the space beside a door suits a vertical one.
