The artist

Meet Brett Scarola, a photographer raised by the outdoors

Brett Scarola grew up in the Pacific Northwest and spent nearly all of his young years outside. He came home only when his mother rang the dinner bell.

His family had no television. After dinner, they made something together, drawing or painting with his dad. Brett credits that childhood for his feeling for light and color.

He bought his first DSLR as an adult, while living in Texas. It started a career as a traveling photographer, and he has never looked back.

The moment

Joshua Tree Sunset: the story behind the photograph

In Joshua Tree National Park, the sun sits low and slips through the arms of a single Joshua tree. The desert flowers below catch the last of the gold.

It is the quiet minute before evening, when the heat lets go and everything glows. That is what Brett Scarola caught, and it is our most loved piece of his.

People choose it for that feeling. A long drive, a warm evening, a place that asked nothing of you but to look.

Mount Rainier and Canfield Mountain feel at home with timber, stone and wool.

On a gallery wall

Hang all four in one frame color. Desert, forest and lake read as one journey.
