The artist
Meet Gil Stunner, from wrenches to lenses
Gil Stunner was born in Lebanon and now calls the New York area home. He started out as a mechanic, with years spent under hoods and over handlebars.
Then cameras got involved. Today he photographs people, cars, motorcycles and far places, from West African streets to vintage racers on New Jersey beaches at dawn.
His work has been featured in Auto Heroes Magazine, named to Photographize's list of 100 inspiring artists of 2024, and curated by Saatchi Art. Helm + Oar shows his work in a rotating residency.

The races
Where the machines run
Most of these photographs were made at vintage beach races in Wildwood, New Jersey. A few go further afield.

Three Bandits: the story behind the photograph
Three vintage motorcycles race side by side along the shoreline at Wildwood. Gil lets the motion blur, so the riders and the beach turn soft and fast.
He says he photographs things that move fast and people who move slow. Here, everything moves fast.
Hang it where you want a little speed and freedom in the room.

Motorcycle wall art for the living room, and beyond
Gritty, cinematic and full of motion, these photographs bring the energy of race day indoors.
In the living room or den
Hang one large horizontal print above the sofa, sized to about two-thirds of its width. Leather, steel and dark wood suit these scenes.
In an office or garage
A race-day print like Rush The Line or Beach Bullet gives a work space a little horsepower.
On a gallery wall
Mix black and white with color. Three Bandits and Checkered Air calm the bright, smoky race scenes around them.
