Plant Passenger:Vintage Cars, Turned Into Gardens
A New York studio fills vintage cars with living plants and parks them where no one expects a garden. The installations do not last. These photographs do, printed and framed by Helm + Oar.

I. The artist
Meet Keith Martine, founder of Plant Passenger
Keith Martine is a New York creative and the founder and creative director of Plant Passenger. The studio builds living art installations on vehicles.
He shoots only on film, in natural light, and leaves his images unedited. What you see is what the street, the sun and the season gave him.
The idea is simple and a little defiant. Plant Passenger sets living plants against the lines of a classic car, which the studio describes as juxtaposing Mother Nature against human design.

Every installation is built by hand, on a real street, for a short time.
II. The installations
Gardens in unexpected places
Every Plant Passenger photograph begins as an installation, built on a real street for a short time.

The Lower East Side, 2023
Bird's Eye began as a temporary work of art for the Lower East Side Girls Club in New York.
See Bird's Eye
Lecce, Italy, 2024
Cherry Red was created as a temporary installation in Lecce, in the southern region of Puglia.

Miami, Florida
A vintage Land Rover, a crowd of palms and Art Deco light became a series of four photographs, including Junk In The Trunk.

No Reservations
An offshoot series that sets a full dining table on a vintage car, a playful answer to the scramble for a reservation.

Junk In The Trunk: the story behind the photograph
In Miami, a vintage Land Rover in soft sage green sits on cream wheels, its back end overflowing. Palms, philodendrons and oversized leaves spill toward the street.
It is a car built to go anywhere, standing still long enough to grow a garden. That is the moment Plant Passenger caught, and the one you keep when it hangs on your wall.
People rarely choose it for the car. They choose it for what it says: slow down, let things grow, take the long way home.

V. At home
Vintage car wall art for the living room, and beyond
Botanical, nostalgic and a little playful, these photographs warm up a room fast.

In the living room
Hang one large piece above the sofa, sized to about two-thirds of its width. The greens soften leather, linen and wood alike.
In an entryway or hallway
A tall print, like Junk In The Trunk, turns a narrow wall into the first thing guests remember.
On a gallery wall
Group three from the same series. The car repeats, and the story builds from frame to frame.
VI. The whole collection
Every Plant Passenger print, from New York to Lecce
35 photographs, each one a garden that lasted a day. Shown in a mix of frames; every piece comes in Black, White, Hickory and Heritage Walnut.
New York
The studio's home city. These gardens were parked on Manhattan streets, from the Lower East Side to SoHo.
No Reservations
An offshoot of Plant Passenger: the same love of vintage cars, set with a feast instead of a garden.
Miami and Miami Beach
The sage-green Land Rover of the Miami series, then a Porsche 911 Targa, Mercedes-Benz convertibles and a Volkswagen Beetle in Miami Beach.
Madison, New Jersey
Three cream Mercedes-Benz convertibles and a Porsche 911 Targa, filled with flowers, one of them outside Sunday Motor Co.
California
A yellow car in Venice and a desert classic in Palm Springs, planted with succulents and desert flora.
Italy
Cherry Red was made in Lecce, in the southern region of Puglia, as a temporary work of art in 2024.

The print quality is phenomenal - vibrant, razor-sharp, and high-end, and the framing looks extremely sleek.
